will hurt the economy wsh when you look at first responders, teachers, people in the military, the pentagon. i mean, when you look at that and you're balancing it off against oil and gas subsidies, yachts and corporate jet loopholes, i mean, come on. do they really think the american people are stupid? >> even beyond that politics -- i completely agree with how you set it up, but beyond that politics, remember the reason we got to this point was because republicans wanted to push us over the debt ceiling crisis, threaten default. these cuts were supposed to be the things that republicans wouldn't want to do. so if republicans won't stop us weakens the national security position of the united states, then what do republicans stand for? they have an even bigger problem than just dealing with first responders. what do republicans think are important? if it's not national security or the cuts they were supposed to stop from happening, then where do they draw the line? republicans just don't know what they are standing up for anymore. >> and it looks like they're willing to let it go right now.

we're talking about who's going to head the pentagon. and let me tell you this, ryan, tell you how blatantly inconsistent and unprecedented this is. he said in 2005 that presidential nominees shouldn't be filibustered. "i think the president is entitled to an up or down that is a simple majority. voter nominations both to his cabinet and to the executive branch and, also, to the judiciary. 2005 up or down vote, nominees for cabinet and judiciary and executive branch. now, he's leading a filibuster, ryan. >> yeah, that easter's exactly . if the republicans want to pick who the cabinet secretaries are, then they have to elect a president. they didn't win the presidential election, therefore, they -- i guess they should be thankful he's picking a republican. john mccain said earlier this is partly about benghazi but it's also about the simple fact that they don't like chuck hagel. they said they don't like him. mccain said you can disagree without being disagreeable and ha hagel is disz agreeable. >> they don't like him, but he was a republ

. >>> the pentagon today passed a plan to furlough 8,000 workers if the cuts take effect. it's shameful. and the president is fighting that. today, he gave interviews to 8 different tv shows around the country, demand gd the gop stop these spending cuts, and, instead, close loopholes for the rich. >> instead of us cutting education, mental health programs and a whole range of other things that are really important, we should be focused on programs that we know don't work, waste in government and some of these tax holes that, frankly, only benefit the well-off and the well connected. now i only need congress to act and they've got 9 days to do it. >> the president is fighting to stop these cuts. but as we said last night, if they do happen, you'll know who to thank. if your child loses the head start program, thank the republicans. if you have to pay more for your milk because of the food inspectors, thank the republicans. and if you're one of the hundreds of thousands of people who lose their jobs, remember to thank the republicans. joining me now is joy reed and jared sps
